Graded exams in musical theatre

What a graded musical theatre exam covers

Musical theatre draws singing, acting and dance together into one graded, performance-ready discipline, assessed under the same progressive structure as every other art form.

Every one of the six organisations awarding it also examines music, drama or both. Musical theatre is not a fourth thing beside the others so much as the three assessed together.

Where musical theatre sits in the framework

  • Musical theatre carries the same graded progression as music, dance and drama. Grades 1 to 3 sit at Level 1 of the Regulated Qualifications Framework, Grades 4 to 5 at Level 2, and Grades 6 to 8 at Level 3, alongside the other art forms.
Recognised by OfqualMany awarding organisations are recognised by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, and by its partners in Wales and Northern Ireland.
On the RQF, Levels 1 to 4Graded exams sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework in England, from Grade 1 through to the advanced vocational grades in dance.
Mapped to the EQFThe RQF is mapped to the European Qualifications Framework, which improves the understanding and portability of qualifications across Europe.
