CDET produces annual comparability and standardisation reports on assessment standards across member Awarding Organisations which offer Graded Examinations in Dance and Musical Theatre.

Comparability and standardisation exercise 2013

In Summer 2013, 9 Awarding Organisations spent a day at CDET’s offices reviewing DVDs of each others examinations with the purpose of comparing assessment standards across their respective institutions. The study principally focused on whether the level of demand for various Intermediate Vocational Graded Examinations is comparable, thus confirming a benchmark which organisations could apply internally across genres and as a process for standardising examiners. Participants included the GQAL, IDTA, ISTD, NATD, PTD, RAD, RBS, SDS and UKA.

It was excellent to acknowledge a high degree of comparability across the various Awarding Organisations and a generous willingness on their part to comment constructively and openly on fellow members’ qualifications.

Comparability and standardisation exercise 2014

On 18th September 2014, 13 Awarding Organisations spent a day at the offices of the Royal Academy of Dance reviewing DVDs of each others Grade 3 examinations with the purpose of comparing assessment standards between their respective institutions and consistency in their application across different dance genres and musical theatre. Participants included the BATD, GQAL, ISTD, IDTA, NATD, PTD, RAD, RBS, RSL, SDS, TCL, and UKA. Also, the BBO attended as an observer.

It was excellent to experience a good degree of comparability across the range of genres offered by Awarding Organisations and a strong collective sense of responsibility in sharing good practice and ensuring the consistent application of standards.

Comparability and standardisation exercise 2015

The comparability exercise for 2015 followed on from the work carried out in 2013 and 2014 by considering the comparability of standards across a diverse range of genres at Grade 5. The organisations participating in the 2015 study included BATD, BBO, GQAL, IDTA, ISTD, NATD, PTD, RAD, RSL, SDS, TCL,  UKA and UTD. The RBS attended as an observer.

Given the number of organisations taking part it was rewarding to see a high degree of comparability in terms of assessment standards and also a willingness on behalf of all Awarding Organisations to participate fully in discussions. It was recommended that further comparability studies should be carried out in the future.
